The Upright piano from the movie Casablanca sold at Bonhams in New York after a ‘frenzied’ bidding battle apparently, for $3.4M – It is one of the most famous pianos in the world, the piano Ingrid Bergman was close to when she delivered one of Hollywood’s unforgettable lines: “Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’ Humphrey Bogart was leaning over the piano listening while Dooley Wilson, as ‘Sam’, plays the piano. A piece of musical history and the highest value piano ever sold, incredible.

STEINWAY CONCERT GRAND WITH A HISTORY

When clients look at our pianos on viewing days one of the frequently asked questions is, “Can you tell me the history of this piano?”

For this walnut cased Steinway D, dating from 1875, the answer is, “Yes, we certainly can!” A plaque set into the piano commemorates some members of the Larkworthy family and gives three sets of dates; 1877 to 81, 1874 to 77, and 1887 to 91. The dates can be traced to Marlborough School, representing the time spent there by the three Larkworthy brothers. From there the present owners were able trace Mr Peter Larkworthy, whose maternal great-grandfather, Mr Alfred Bell bought the piano new from Steinway . Mr Bell’s passion was music and he bought the piano to grace his music room in his mansion, Bayford House, in Hampstead London.

A book by Mr Larkworthy speaks of the soirees held by Mr Bell at Bayford House where many luminaries of the day are said to have taken part, including; Sir Arthur Sullivan, Abbé Liszt, Sir Gilbert Scott and many others.

Sometime in the early-twentieth century the piano moved within the Larkworthy family to Kensington before being donated, in the late 1930s, to Marlborough school. In 1998 it was renovated and sold to its present owner, since when it has graced a notable Somerset house.

12 June 2014 sale: Estimate £22,000 – 28,000

Piano news from around the world.

Piano news in Syria Musicians are playing in Yarmouk camp, a Damascus neighbourhood home to the city’s Palestinian refugees. Yarmouk is one of the worst sites of the starvation facing Syrians in areas besieged by the government. But amid the devastation, musicians with a battered piano are making music for their neighbours.

As the video pans across the destruction of the neighbourhood, the chorus of the song is, “Oh displaced people, return. The journey has gone for too long. Yarmouk, we are part of you and that will never change.”

The Syrian government has been accused by activists and aid organisations of using starvation as a weapon in places like Yarmouk as part of its ongoing siege of neighbourhoods with a presence of rebel forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates at least 86 people died from lack of food and medicine in Yarmouk. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which oversees aid to Palestinians across the Middle East, was able to enter the camp recently to deliver at least 3,000 food rations to tens of thousands of residents.

Piano News from Czech Republik

Piano-playing policeman praised in Czech Republic

A Czech police officer who was filmed playing a piano while on duty has been praised by the Czech chief of police for boosting the force’s image.

A mobile phone video of the performance has been watched nearly 800,000 times on YouTube, it lasts only 30 seconds or so.

The policeman had taken a break to sit down at one of the pianos placed around central Prague for public use.

Still wearing his Hi-Viz vest, he rattled off a few bars of a South Korean composition.

Police chief Martin Cervicek said the clip of the officer playing River Flows In You, by the South Korean composer Yiruma, had done more to improve the image of the force than anything he himself would ever achieve.

The young traffic policeman only joined the force six weeks ago but it is fair to say he is now the most famous officer in the Czech Republic, the BBC’s Rob Cameron reports from Prague.

Mr Cervicek said he had spoken to the officer, whose name has not been released, and wished him the same success in his police career.

A superior had spoken to the new recruit about what he could and could not do on duty, he added, but the piano-playing policeman was not formally disciplined.
