Membership of our Association is quite simple, yet remains quite stringent. The applicant must have been established as a Company for at least 10 years, have a training programme in place for all operational staff, drivers and Piano Movers, must be of good repute, hold a European Operating Licence and have adequate Liability Insurance Cover. Memebership of another reputable Moving association such as FEDEMAC or British Association of Removers may help an application but may not guarantee acceptance. Europe needs good Piano Movers and EPiMA is the answer.

Piano Auctions London- Yamaha, Steinway,Bechstein, Bluthner, Bosendorfer pianos

The London Piano Auctions held at Conway Hall , Holborn, London on December 12th with over 120 Lots including many Yamaha pianos, Steinway pianos, Bluthner pianos, Bechstein pianos plus a selection of other pianos including Bosendorfer, Broadwood, Kawai and many antique pianos for sale.  The ‘120 lots’ auction was delivered and set-up by G&R Removals in 8 hours by 12 men – an unprecedented and unrivalled service. No other piano transport Company ever managed to provide such a service involving such a variety of makes and models of reconditioned, second hand and antique pianos to the London piano auctions, we truly believe we have an unrivalled service. On Thursday 11th April the Piano Auctions saw visitors from around the world, piano buyers from the USA, China and Europe. Steinway pianos were particularly interesting as usual to all buyers and the Chinese piano buyers seemed to like the antique pianos as well as the Steinway and Bechstein pianos. The Yamaha pianos were of little interest to them as they can buy the pianos cheaper in China. The Piano Auctions have a growing  reputation in China for unusual antique pianos as well as offering great name pianos at very interesting prices. The comparative piano auction in Shanghai held at the New Expo Center during the Music China exhibition does not offer such great offers and opportunities as the Piano Auctions Ltd in London.

Steinways! Steinways! Steinways! DECEMBER 2013 UPDATE!

With a new upright piano costing in excess of £20,000, and a grand more than £40,000, it seems remarkable that you can still buy one in our auction for £1,000 and £4,000 respectively – albeit it they may be 100 years or so older – they’re still Steinways.

In our September 2013 sale we had 27 Steinways and now in December, breaking our own record, we have an amazing 39!! These range from uprights at around £1,000 to a recent Model B with a guide price of £30,000 – 35,000.

This is the reason why PianoAuctions Ltd has become the venue for buying and selling second-hand Steinways!

Shipping pianos to China

Cargo Plane

Airfreight a Steinway piano to Shanghai

Last year our packers wrapped over 170 pianos for export to Asia, mainly shipping pianos to China and Korea, to meet the rising demand for European pianos in Asia, the particularly sought after brands are Steinway, Bechstein, Bluthner and Erard pianos rather than Yamaha or Kawai. Most will be shipped to China by sea into Beijing or Shanghai in containers this week, but we have sent one piano by airfreight to Korea and one piano this week for airfreight to Shanghai.

Airfreight is apparently considered one of the safest modes of freight, but it is essential the pianos are packed correctly for this to be effective. Shipping Pianos to China is relatively problem free until the pianos arrive at port, ultimately the paperwork needs to be in order 100% and a good clearing agent is essential – please contact us for a complete service for shipping pianos to China. We have the facility in the UK for transport, collection, storage, export packing the pianos prior to shipping to China, Korea or elsewhere with clearing agents in most countries and cities around the world. When shipping a piano, not only to China or Korea, it is important to know that the piano is in good hands all the way from the UK to your port of entry or final destination, this starts with a good moving company such as G&R Removals in London, who can collect your piano with the right equipment and trained staff, fully export wrap and pack the pianos into timber cases when necessary and carry out the UK haulage, customs formalities, customs clearance and International shipping to your port of arrival, where it is also important to have a reputable and well – established customs clearing agent for when the piano or container arrives at the port otherwise you could spend a fortune on demurrage charges and additional handling costs. G&R Removals have great contacts throughout China Asia and across the world. When you need Piano shipping you need to consider your piano shipping agent, ask G&R for their free advice and help before you go elsewhere.

Brand new for 2014 – G&R has formed an association with ADP in Shanghai called D2D – Europe to China for a door to door service including local customs clearance, documentation and freight by road, sea, and air available (see above for shipping pianos to China) Call our office for rates or e-mail (London office) (Shanghai office)

We frequently need to ask this question to comply with the law on selling pianos with ivory keyboards. It’s not always as easy to tell as you might imagine!

So if you are not sure how to tell if your keyboard has ivory keys we would recommend this very helpful video on you Tube. Simply Google ‘How To Tell If You Have Ivory Piano Keys?’ and you should be directed to a clear video presented by Robert of Living Pianos. (If you have any difficulty with this, cut and paste the following into your browser:- )

Current legislation states that if the piano is manufactured after 1946 an Article 10 Certificate is required by law to sell an instrument with an ivory keyboard. Here at Piano Auctions Ltd we are happy to apply for Article 10 Certificates on behalf of our vendors.

If you have any questions regarding ivory keyboards please do not hesitate to contact us.

For more information on selling ivory keyboards please visit the Animal Health & Veterinary Agency (AHVLA), UK CITES Management Authority at

Bluthner Grand piano on the 58th floor of the Shard in London

A Bluthner Grand piano was delivered by G&R Removals to the 58th floor of the Shard in London on behalf of the Bluthner Piano Centre in London. If this isn’t the highest piano in Europe we want to know where there’s a higher one, the top of Mont Blanc?File:Cmglee Horminan London skyline.jpg Eiffel Tower ??

The Shard is Western Europe’s tallest building, completed in May 2012. Designed by world renowned architect Renzo Piano, and standing at an inspiring 310 meters (1,016 feet), it is an iconic and positive addition to the London skyline and a truly landmark project.

Inspired by the spires of London’s churches and the top sails of the ships that used to moor on the Thames, the Shard is an elegant slim glass spire with individual ‘‘shards’’ that make up the outer skin. The use of sophisticated glazing and angled panes reflect the light as the sun moves, creating an elegant presence on the skyline.

Located at London Bridge Quarter, replacing the 28 year old Southwark Tower, the scheme has been conceived by Renzo Piano as a mixed use ‘‘vertical city’’ that includes a public piazza, world class office space, an exclusive collection of residential apartments which is the highest in the UK, the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel with spa and pool and international restaurants and viewing galleries offering unprecedented 360 degree views of London.

Unlike other skyscrapers in London the Shard has a mix of elements to encourage public interaction, combining both public and private space in one energetic community. It is expected to become a new focal point in the capital and to be adopted enthusiastically by Londoners.

The Place, also designed by Renzo Piano, sits alongside the Shard and benefits from a stunning roof terrace. At 17 floors, it offers an impressive 600,000 sq ft of office space making it a perfect corporate headquarters. London Bridge Quarter integrates these two landmark buildings into one master planned project that will transform and upgrade London Bridge station to the highest standards of transport design, connecting seamlessly to new public realm to transform the public space outside London Bridge Station into a dynamic commercial and mixed use area. London Bridge Quarter is a development by Sellar on behalf of LBQ Ltd, a joint venture between Sellar Property Group and the State of Qatar.

And a Bluthner Grand piano way up on the 58th floor – probably the most elevated piano in Europe… delivered and positioned by G&R Removals – London.

Piano shipping to China

Following a record year in 2012 for piano shipping to China, surpassed again in 2013, we have shipped hundreds of pianos to China, as a result we have formed a partnership with a Shanghai Company to offer a brand new service D2D – door to door Europe to China piano transport and shipping with full destination services available in many Chinese locations, contact (London office) and (Shanghai office)

Together we specialise in transport and shipping of all Antique English, German and French pianos by Broadwood, Steinway, Bechstein, Bluthner and Erard with decorative inlaid cases and candelabras. Upright pianola pianos, antique cabinet pianos, square pianos and Forte Grand pianos for China. On one hand it is sad to see all those historical instruments exported forever from England to China, on the other hand they are off to a new home and appreciated more than they are here. Chinese piano buyers seek Steinway Bechstein and Bluthner Grand pianos, any model in any condition , it is a highly regarded status symbol and a mark of success to own a fine musical instrument too.

In return and by contrast, we have seen a significant increase in demand on last year for the Chinese built piano ‘Bentley’, particularly a brand new range of digital pianos to rival the top brands currently on the market. Following the success of their UK launch at Intermusic’s exhibition at the Institute of Directors in London’s Pall Mall we are operating a Nationwide distribution service to meet the growing demand for these Bentley digital pianos.
The UK piano export market remains strong and exciting as long as there will be a supply to feed the demand, how many pianos do we have on our Island tucked away in our living rooms or piano shops store rooms? With overseas piano buyers now looking further afield, in Italy, Spain, France and Germany we can provide a regular service to most European countries although the additional costs of European road transport makes these pianos a good deal more expensive for the buyer. Piano Trade Exports a UK based team of piano traders with English and Chinese speaking staff have been quick to seize the opportunity and have a huge range of pianos for sale, a number of serious Chinese buyers and regularly seek quality used pianos for their buyers, contact Kelly Zhang for more information on buying or selling pianos if you are a Chinese buyer and have concerns about getting your pianos through Chinese Customs, please contact us as we have a Chinese Customs expert based in Shanghai who can help, we can introduce you to a Chinese speaking UK based agent too for customs clearance advice and procedures in the UK and China.
We look for ward to the year ahead and increased volume of trade with piano buyers in China, do not hesitate to contact us on +44 20 8994 9733 for more advice and help on piano shipping or e-mail us Thank you.

Year of the Horse

A new Year is here and we’ve all survived 2012, the end of the world has come and gone – as did bird flu, swine flu, SARS and Y2K in previous years … Now what? The US has prevented their economy plummeting off the ‘Fiscal Cliff’, the Greek / Euro crisis which was rammed down our necks by the media during 2012 seems to have settled down a bit – maybe the wars / civil unrest in North Africa and the Middle East are now more interesting then the troubled Euro creating world economic devastation… who knows? Will 2013 bring better news all round … we’ll see. Year of the Horse apparently.
Closer to home and back to business, we experienced a great start to the New Year, we’ve added 2 new members of staff to our operational team Barry and Jacob, they are responding extremely well to training and have already experienced and assisted in many difficult piano deliveries with the piano teams.
Our new truck is due to arrive at the end of January, which we’re all looking forward to seeing, particularly George who will be taking charge of the keys of a brand new 18 tonne with a 10 metre temperature controlled body, riding on air suspension. Live satellite tracking systems and In-cab ‘Smart-Witness’ cameras will be fitted. This will also be equipped with 20 brand new, tailor-made, padded piano covers and All Terrain piano wheels among the other standard equipment carried by our trucks. This will be used for our growing UK and European market.
Intermusic Ltd held their annual exhibition at the Institute of Directors in London’s Pall Mall, it was extremely well attended and received by the UK’s leading piano dealers. Those I spoke to were cautiously optimistic of the forthcoming year despite having a quieter than usual Christmas. Of the 30 pianos on display were brand new ranges of digital pianos built by Pearl River in China – the World’s largest piano factory – through to the well regarded Bechstein and Hoffmann pianos, all tastes and budgets were catered for I was told. We completed the delivery and set-up of the exhibition in just over 2 hours with 10 staff, pausing only for coffee and a generous stack of bacon butties.
January has seen one 40′ container of pianos shipped to Shanghai with another 2 containers booked to go out from our warehouse – also to Shanghai. These will be on the sea during the Chinese New Year to arrive shortly afterwards. The antique piano business from the UK to China certainly seems to be buoyant with more Chinese buyers emerging all the time and growing interest in China for European pianos. Let’s hope we can meet the demand.
Taking this opportunity to wish all of our customers across the world, a very happy and prosperous 2013 – year of the horse – shame on you Tesco and Lidl!

Piano Auction – Yamaha Steinway Bechstein Erard pianos for sale

Only one month away from the next London Piano Auctions, we look forward to meeting all our existing and potential new customers there, as usual Vicky will have sweets and gifts to give away.
We have almost 100 pianos ready for transport to the piano auctions with a few still to collect, I’m sure there’s a piano to suit all budgets and tastes, with reconditioned Yamaha Upright pianos which look (almost) as good as new, plenty of Bechstein and Steinway pianos for the discerning pianists (with bigger budgets) antique and modern pianos too.
The Piano Auctions will be held at the Conway Halls, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London, for more details and catalogue visit
With the usual attaractions of Steinway pianos, Yamaha pianos and various antique pianos for sale, the interest will be huge.
Watch this space for more piano auction news. Hope to see you all there.

Post Piano Auction ..

Wow – what a great sale, what a great attendance from the Great British piano trade and how well they shopped! The reconditioned Yamaha Upright pianos proved to be very popular as were the always sought after Steinway pianos – and not only bought by the British, some very interesting pianos will now be shipped abroad. Surprisingly not as many of the antique pianos were bought by the Chinese piano buyers as were anticipated, they aimed for Steinway and Bechstein Pianos, both very well respected European piano makers of course. This does support the evidence of growing interest in China for all good European products, not only pianos but cars, clothing, watches and accessories too and who can blame them really? This does also emphasise that you cannot substitute quality for price, no matter where you are in the world and what it is you do, or what you want to purchase. However the Piano Auctions do offer the opportunity to get the best of both, there are great pianos at really affordable prices. G&R Removals have the same principle, to provide a good value service.

Bluthner piano on the 58th floor of the Shard in London

G&R Removals – The Piano Movers were asked by the Bluthner Piano Centre in London, to deliver a Bluthner Grand Piano to the ‘Shard’ in London, Western Europe’s tallest building (designed by Renzo Piano). The views from the 58th floor were spectacular and inspirational, the photos taken by our during the piano delivery do not justify the view, see the link below or visit the building if you can.
The delivery to the Shard was made under tight security and with careful planning, safety equipment had to be worn at all times and timing had to be strictly adhered to. Other than that it was like a normal London Piano move. Our highly trained piano moving team were selected to transport the Bluthner piano from the Bluthner piano centre in London and transport it to the Shard, they knew security would be tight and they received a security briefing prior to delivery. Delivery, luckily, was by use of the lifts, the Bluthner piano fitted in well along with our piano moving team. The delivery was fairly straight forward from a technical point of view but extraordinary from a scenic point of view. All of the crew were amazed at the view and wondered who the lucky pianist was who would eventually be able to play this Bluthner piano, gazing across the river, the London skyline and beyond (on a clear day), it must be truly inspiring to play the piano when you’re up with the gods as it were.

Are there any other higher pianos in Europe? We are not so sure, if any readers of this know of a higher piano in Europe or know of one, we would love to hear from you and see the photos too.

Have a look at the views of London at the link below… Up with the gods

Report from previous Music China shows-
Music China 2012
Just back from the fast-paced, buzzing Metropolis that is Shanghai, the host city of Music China. At the Shanghai New Exhibition Expo Centre in PuDong, participants from the Worlds Music Industry descended with excitement, anticipation and optimism.
Representing G&R – The Piano Movers, my interest mainly focused on the piano hall, E.1, with impressive displays from all European Piano Makers, Bechstein, Bluthner, Fazioli, Bosendorfer and Steinway evidently making great efforts to showcase their pianos in Shanghai. The Chinese piano manufacturers equal in their efforts to impress and evidently passionate about their business, with innovative designs and exciting ideas.
As the days passed, the halls were swarming with buyers and traders from all over Asia, the Piano Auctions Ltd stand was continuosly mobbed by buyers of antique European pianos for the Chinese and Asian market. It presented a great opportunity to meet existing customers who I hadn’t met before and attach their faces to the names, likewise potential new clients with requests for shipping pianos from the UK and Europe to China. Our only hurdle was clearing pianos through Chinese Customs, which was resolved in a meeting with the Chinese authorities on Friday who seemed to be co-operative and accomodating. This news was not only good for us, but for all Chinese piano buyers and suppliers alike. With our agents able to to clear customs in Shanghai and arrange full destination services, a new door has been opened for UK and European pianos into China.
I have to say the atmosphere at Music China was matched only by the excitement of the Shanghai nightlife. Great Show, great City and great opportunities
Well done Music China. See you next year.

Music China 2012, jointly organized by China Music Instruments Association (CMIA), INTEX Shanghai and Messe Frankfurt (HK), came to a successful close in Shanghai New International Expo Center, on 14th Oct. Since its first show in Shanghai in 2002, Music China has grown to be the greatest music festival in Asia-pacific region and has won much international compliments. Every year, it attracts tens of thousands of musical dealers, professional buyers, musicians and educators and is highly praised by leaders of China Light Industry Federation, Ministry of Culture, Department of Commerce, Shanghai Culture and Broadcasting Bureau, etc.

About Exhibitors

Though amid the gloom of global economic growth, enthusiasm to Music China 2012 of exhibitors home and abroad still maintained high. Show space amounted to 86,000 square meters, with 1,606 exhibitors coming from 30 countries and regions, 13% more than last year. Both of them have surpassed our expectation. Especially, the number of exhibitor delegations grew to 11, renewing the record. Amongst the exhibitors are many famous brands in the music business today, including Pearl River, Hsinghai Piano, KHS, Parsons, Yamaha, Steinway, Roland, AXL, Kawai, etc. Music China is now widely recognized as one of the largest gatherings in the international MI industry.

Traditional Chinese instrument has long been a distinction of Music China. In order to upgrade the overall image, we paid great efforts on the area’s design and decoration by first organizing all traditional Chinese instrument exhibitors in a same pavilion, standardizing the decoration and zoning in different colors. Thanks to the great effects, it appeals a folk music fervor in 2012. The popularity of the pavilion also showed the prosperity of traditional Chinese music.

About Visitors

Altogether 60,172 visitors home and abroad have been attracted to Music China 2012, an increase of 15.3% than last year. Influenced by the economic slowdown and political instability of western countries, number of the foreign visitors has edged down to 3,245. Yet the domestic music market was quite active, national visitors, especially professional visitors, including musical dealers, art groups, music colleges, cultural institutions, increasing grandly, thanks to China’s Culture Development Policy and organizer’s effective promotion. The show time coverage of weekends also boosted the great popularity of the show.

In order to further advance the healthy and prosperous development of MI industry, we continuously strengthened the promotion to domestic professional visitors by setting detailed visitor database, analyzing and promoting specifically. More qualified programs, such as meetings and seminars, have also attracted numbers of professional buyers. Music China 2013 should not be missed by any pro-active Music professional.
