Registration

All bidding is done using a ‘Paddle Number’. You need to register at the main desk if you want to bid and then you will be given your number.

You can do this on the morning of the auction or on the viewing days beforehand by completing a Registration Form.

You will be asked for your:
+ Contact details and signature
+ Method of payment (see later section on payment)
+ How the piano will be removed from Conway Hall (see later section on removal)
+ How you heard about Piano Auctions.
+ Identification (passport, driving licence, credit card)

We will then give you your Paddle Number; this is your personal number to use when you are bidding for your piano.

The Auction

The auction takes place in the Main Hall. There is seating upstairs in the balcony and around the Main Hall. Make sure you can see the auctioneer, who will be on the stage at the rostrum, and then he can see you!

Bidding starts at Lot 1 and follows the numerical order printed in the catalogue and amendment sheet.

The auctioneer will start the bidding and will invite bids incrementally until the item has been sold. He will be looking out for bidders. The bidding ends when the auctioneer brings his gavel down. This final bid is called the Hammer Price.

Bidding

The estimated guide price in the catalogue is just that. Some lots may go for more and some may go for less. Some lots may not reach their reserve and therefore remain unsold.

There are four ways to bid:

In Person You are in the room during the auction and bid for your chosen lot yourself using your paddle number.

Commission Bid. If you are unable to attend the auction, or are worried about bidding in person, you may leave a maximum bid on a Commission Bid form. The auctioneer will then bid incrementally on your behalf during the sale up to the maximum amount you have chosen. If the final bid is less than your maximum bid you will only have to pay this lower price.

Telephone Bid. If you are unable to attend the auction you may follow the sale and bid by phone. You will be called a short time before your lot number is due. You will then be talked through the bidding on your chosen lot and given the option to continue or stop bidding.

Internet Bid It is possible to bid online during the auction through www.the-saleroom.com/pianoauctions Please note the-saleroom.com make a 3% charge for their service which we administer on their behalf.

+ Set yourself a limit. Remember to include the transport costs, Buyer’s premium and VAT (see below)
+ You need to be ready for the lot number you are interested in.
+ If you want to bid you need to raise your Paddle Number.
+ The auctioneer will acknowledge you are now in the bidding and will continue with the sale.
+ You can drop out of the bidding at any time (do not raise your Paddle Number).
+ If your bid is successful the auctioneer will take a note of your Paddle Number before moving on to the next item.

The final cost of your piano is worked out as follows:

Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium + VAT on the Buyer’s Premium = Total
+ Hammer Price (HP) is the final bid on the piano
+ Buyer’s Premium (BP) is 20% on the Hammer Price
+ VAT on the Buyer’s Premium is 20% on the Buyer’s Premium

eg HP of £500 + BP of £100 + VAT of £20 = £620

HP of £1,000 + BP of £200 + VAT of £40 = £1,240

HP of £5,000 + BP of £1,000 VAT of £200 = £6,200

* Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium + VAT on both (only on lots with asterisks*) = Total

Sometimes pianos are marked with an asterisk * in the catalogue. This is because VAT has to be paid on the entire Hammer Price as well as the Buyer’s Commission.

eg HP of £500 + BP of £100 + VAT of £120 = £720

HP of £1,000 + BP of £200 + VAT of £240 = £1,440

HP of £5,000 + BP of £1,000 VAT of £1,200 = £7,200

** Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium + VAT on the Buyer’s Premium + VAT at 5% on HP (only on lots with asterisks**) = Total

Sometimes pianos are marked with two asterisks ** in the catalogue. This is because the item has been imported from outside the EU and VAT is payable on the Hammer Price of that lot at the rate of 5%

eg HP of £500 + BP of £100 + VAT of £45 = £645

HP of £1,000 + BP of £200 + VAT of £90 = £1,290

HP of £5,000 + BP of £1,000 VAT of £450 = £6,450

The Upright piano from the movie Casablanca sold at Bonhams in New York after a ‘frenzied’ bidding battle apparently, for $3.4M – It is one of the most famous pianos in the world, the piano Ingrid Bergman was close to when she delivered one of Hollywood’s unforgettable lines: “Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’ Humphrey Bogart was leaning over the piano listening while Dooley Wilson, as ‘Sam’, plays the piano. A piece of musical history and the highest value piano ever sold, incredible.

STEINWAY CONCERT GRAND WITH A HISTORY

When clients look at our pianos on viewing days one of the frequently asked questions is, “Can you tell me the history of this piano?”

For this walnut cased Steinway D, dating from 1875, the answer is, “Yes, we certainly can!” A plaque set into the piano commemorates some members of the Larkworthy family and gives three sets of dates; 1877 to 81, 1874 to 77, and 1887 to 91. The dates can be traced to Marlborough School, representing the time spent there by the three Larkworthy brothers. From there the present owners were able trace Mr Peter Larkworthy, whose maternal great-grandfather, Mr Alfred Bell bought the piano new from Steinway . Mr Bell’s passion was music and he bought the piano to grace his music room in his mansion, Bayford House, in Hampstead London.

A book by Mr Larkworthy speaks of the soirees held by Mr Bell at Bayford House where many luminaries of the day are said to have taken part, including; Sir Arthur Sullivan, Abbé Liszt, Sir Gilbert Scott and many others.

Sometime in the early-twentieth century the piano moved within the Larkworthy family to Kensington before being donated, in the late 1930s, to Marlborough school. In 1998 it was renovated and sold to its present owner, since when it has graced a notable Somerset house.

12 June 2014 sale: Estimate £22,000 – 28,000

Piano news from around the world.

Piano news in Syria Musicians are playing in Yarmouk camp, a Damascus neighbourhood home to the city’s Palestinian refugees. Yarmouk is one of the worst sites of the starvation facing Syrians in areas besieged by the government. But amid the devastation, musicians with a battered piano are making music for their neighbours.

As the video pans across the destruction of the neighbourhood, the chorus of the song is, “Oh displaced people, return. The journey has gone for too long. Yarmouk, we are part of you and that will never change.”

The Syrian government has been accused by activists and aid organisations of using starvation as a weapon in places like Yarmouk as part of its ongoing siege of neighbourhoods with a presence of rebel forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates at least 86 people died from lack of food and medicine in Yarmouk. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which oversees aid to Palestinians across the Middle East, was able to enter the camp recently to deliver at least 3,000 food rations to tens of thousands of residents.

Piano News from Czech Republik

Piano-playing policeman praised in Czech Republic

A Czech police officer who was filmed playing a piano while on duty has been praised by the Czech chief of police for boosting the force’s image.

A mobile phone video of the performance has been watched nearly 800,000 times on YouTube, it lasts only 30 seconds or so.

The policeman had taken a break to sit down at one of the pianos placed around central Prague for public use.

Still wearing his Hi-Viz vest, he rattled off a few bars of a South Korean composition.

Police chief Martin Cervicek said the clip of the officer playing River Flows In You, by the South Korean composer Yiruma, had done more to improve the image of the force than anything he himself would ever achieve.

The young traffic policeman only joined the force six weeks ago but it is fair to say he is now the most famous officer in the Czech Republic, the BBC’s Rob Cameron reports from Prague.

Mr Cervicek said he had spoken to the officer, whose name has not been released, and wished him the same success in his police career.

A superior had spoken to the new recruit about what he could and could not do on duty, he added, but the piano-playing policeman was not formally disciplined.

Piano Auctions London- Yamaha, Steinway,Bechstein, Bluthner, Bosendorfer pianos

The London Piano Auctions held at Conway Hall , Holborn, London on December 12th with over 120 Lots including many Yamaha pianos, Steinway pianos, Bluthner pianos, Bechstein pianos plus a selection of other pianos including Bosendorfer, Broadwood, Kawai and many antique pianos for sale.  The ‘120 lots’ auction was delivered and set-up by G&R Removals in 8 hours by 12 men – an unprecedented and unrivalled service. No other piano transport Company ever managed to provide such a service involving such a variety of makes and models of reconditioned, second hand and antique pianos to the London piano auctions, we truly believe we have an unrivalled service. On Thursday 11th April the Piano Auctions saw visitors from around the world, piano buyers from the USA, China and Europe. Steinway pianos were particularly interesting as usual to all buyers and the Chinese piano buyers seemed to like the antique pianos as well as the Steinway and Bechstein pianos. The Yamaha pianos were of little interest to them as they can buy the pianos cheaper in China. The Piano Auctions have a growing  reputation in China for unusual antique pianos as well as offering great name pianos at very interesting prices. The comparative piano auction in Shanghai held at the New Expo Center during the Music China exhibition does not offer such great offers and opportunities as the Piano Auctions Ltd in London.

PIANOS FROM THE COLLECTION OF PIERO LO FARO

Born in Genoa, Italy in 1928, Piero Lo Faro (pictured right) gained his diploma at the Conservatory in Genoa , and the `License de Concert et Virtuosite` in Geneva. He was then mentored by the composer Victor de Sabata.

Playing both as a soloist and with an orchestra, his repertoire focused particularly on impressionist music, and he was renowned for his interpretations of Debussy and Ravel, as well as Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, Franck and Scarlatti. Lo Faro is in fact the only pianist who studied Ravel`s entire works, under de Sabata himself.

He played for the BBC, RAI, Suisse Romande, as well at the State Radio Orchestra of Germany. His performance of Ravel`s Concert for the Left hand, under the conduction of Aldo Ceccato in Brno in the 1990s, won him acclaim. He was awarded many accolades, including the Gold Medal from The University of Genoa.

We are privileged to be offering four of Piero Lo Faro’s pianos in our 10th April 2014 sale.

Post Piano Auction ..

Wow – what a great sale, what a great attendance from the Great British piano trade and how well they shopped! The reconditioned Yamaha Upright pianos proved to be very popular as were the always sought after Steinway pianos – and not only bought by the British, some very interesting pianos will now be shipped abroad. Surprisingly not as many of the antique pianos were bought by the Chinese piano buyers as were anticipated, they aimed for Steinway and Bechstein Pianos, both very well respected European piano makers of course. This does support the evidence of growing interest in China for all good European products, not only pianos but cars, clothing, watches and accessories too and who can blame them really? This does also emphasise that you cannot substitute quality for price, no matter where you are in the world and what it is you do, or what you want to purchase. However the Piano Auctions do offer the opportunity to get the best of both, there are great pianos at really affordable prices. G&R Removals have the same principle, to provide a good value service.
